I just sort of rid of a lot of demons that were inside of me. He played with the Graham Bond Organisation, with John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers and later formed what has been described as the "seminal" jazz rock / progressive rock band, Colosseum. I started out with tin cans actually, to see if I could develop anything, but l got bored trying to get a sound out of it so finally got a drum and started practicing on that. Cause we didnt sound alike. And life just said, I think youve got to go deal with this. Cause I was not happy with things in my life. I sat down with em at the edge of the marina, and I said I cant do this anymore. I love doin it. I gotta go out there and try to get in this business. _[laughs] _Before its too late! I don't like to have every- thing I do so organized that I spend all of my time reading every little note. And really did have a drinking problem, and didnt know it. Sometimes in the paper they'll write, "He played a boring, 20-minute drum solo," and I know perfectly well the guy just doesn't like drum solos, because I never play anything that long. This is a drag, after all this hard work. And Herbie [Herbert] had received a tape from somebody at the label, of Steve Perry. I guess I have a desire to sing and write music again, and Im letting it take me places. RM: I was listening to your Starship recordings, and then I listened to the records you did with Zappa ten years ago I notice that you play a lot of notes with Zappa. That's why I enjoy playing "White Rabbit" with the Starship. We finished the record. Everybody at the airport, man, walkin by, givin me the thumbs-up, like, Yo! He's great at all of the percussion things. And I dont think Ill be able to come back to it if you break it. The way I play is based on feeling-not on something I've been told to do. RM: You're not opposed to electronic percussion in principle? During the time I was with Bowie, I also did Nils Lofgren's first solo album. You were never cool. I did not like it, one bit. AD: Yeah. What did you mean when you said, on that VH1 special, that youd never really felt like part of the band? I just tune them and that's about it. Cause I thought it was silly. I arrived in L.A. and his wife picked me up at the airport and took me to his house, where I lived for nine months. I could never tune it properly, but then I put one of the cast rims on it and it made such a big difference, it's unbelievable. And he will not allow me to have his number. AD: Completely ad-Iib. But the fact that you had thatthats a measure of how big you were. So it was a completely different area for me. Afterbeing with them for 3 years, I'm still having a good time. So I'm setting up a situation now where I'm going to be wearing headphones and have a live mic in the room, and also have a click track. And I just love to see them love it so much. Those are the guys that I look up to. AD: I like the albums I've done with the Starship, of course. AD: I did eight albums with Frank, starting with Chunga's Revenge. You work on something for so many years, and you attain what you attain, which was an amazing feat, and then its sort of like the rug is pulled out from under you. Most of the drum parts on that were written down. I really, honestlyand you must print thisI really dont want to respond to what theyre doing, because what theyre doing is none of my business. Well, there was no proving to us that he could sing. AD: Oh yeah. **When you started your solo career, was that the beginning of the end for Journey? Theres a heavy jazz-fusion influence, and none of the songs are as anthemic as Dont Stop Believin or Lights, the songs that would make you famous. The movie Monster, that Patty Jenkins wrote and directed, with Charlize Theron, was an amazing use of [Dont Stop Believin ]. I used to always push for that when I was playing on stage. Because it was such an amazing use. It depended where you caught me. asked me if I'd like to join his band, with Rod Stewart and Ronnie Wood. We were destroyed by thathe was a wonderful singer, a wonderful bass player, and a great guy, and he was part of a real interesting chemistry that Columbia wanted to sign. So in retrospect [laughs] maybe it wasnt the smartest thing I ever did, because he went, Well, Neals doin one, why cant I do one? And everybodys goin, Well, Neals not doin anything thats gonna conflict with Journey, yknow? If somebody said anything to me, I'd blow up, because my nerves were shattered from being in a complete state of exhaustion. With most rims, if they get dented a little bit, the head will never seat right and you'll never be able to tune the drum. **. leave t.hat .hole, the snare stands out big, and it still sounds like you're playing the bass drum on that beat. Gene and Paul have to have a drummer that they feel interprets their style. I was shocked when I heard that.. Possibly. Which in those days was not good. All the other guys were about 40 and were married. I'm definitely thinking about doing it, but I want to have a plan of approach. His playing always has a bit of a flair to it, but I think he's always a supportive musician and he doesn't overplay. We mastered the record. For in- stance, The Grand Wazoo was almost a jazz big-band record. RM: What type of music was being played in Liverpool? Once you've made your name, you can go into a band, say the Jefferson Starship, and people will say, "There's Aynsley Dunbar. When that audience wanted an encore, and they would not let you leave, it was just so gratifying. Then I got a call from Bob Ezrin, the producer, and he asked me if I would do an album with Lou Reed. Your activity looks suspicious to us. If wed had a crystal ball back then, we woulda wrote twelve of those. . What was the deal with that? But he puts the drum track together one drum at a time, so it can sometimes be very abstract. And I think that proving myself was something that went on for quite some time with the. _, **GQ: The first three Journey albums sound like the work of a completely different band. I just needed to stop. There is only so much you can do before it bores everybody to death. AD: I have a snare drum with a vacuum pad over it-the old Gladstone pad. There was several medical, non-surgical choices, and I tried all of those. According to Albritton, Hendrix was the most fun to cast, and Aynsley Dunbar, the Journey drummer and veteran of Mothers of Invention and the Bluesbreakers, was the most difficult. During an interview with Radio.com ahead of the induction ceremony, Rolie hinted at the possibility of them working together in the context of Journey. She was dying during the writing and recording of that record, and in the middle of doing vocals, she died. It ends up costing an absolute fortune. RM: Let's talk about the Jefferson Starship. All creative processes are a love-hate thing. Then the band's ego got too much for me to cope with and I had to dump them. Thats right. But in January, Jon told me on the phone, I just wanna know. And I said, Dont call it Journey. But thats how the world judges you. And so I thought that was okay. RM: I presume you could have your choice of drum companies. He gave me the back bedroom at his place. And he was a great vocalist for what they were looking for, but they didnt want to have a singer out front. This first album from the group would prove the most successful of the four issued under the Retaliation banner, entering at least one of the charts that existed at the time. I was a free man then. After not having played on stage for several months, that was a lot of stran, but after wards I felt like I could have gone on and played some more. I did manage to learn a lot about music by looking at it and trying to discern what was going on. The Retaliation are rated by many blues aficionados as one the three greatest British Blues bands, along with Fleetwood Mac and John Mayall s Bluesbreakers. Everybody thinks singers are prima donnas. On our third gig, we played two 2-hour sets, one after the other. _[laughs] _Okay? So I went to do my first solo record with him. May 21, 2009. On one song he gave me a chart that was all marching-type drumming-roll after roll, flams, drags, ruffs-and it was great. I had that group The Aynsley Dunbar Retaliation] for about three years, and we built a following around the country. It's one of those political things, part of the business, and I really shouldn't complain because I've been on a lot of records that have been hits. You spend more time counting out the bars than you do listening to the music and understanding it. We redid everything. Tony Soprano thinks Journeys cool. And then the day after, I was at the airport, and youd think we had a hit single again. Do you think you'll have your own group again sometime? **So was that the big strain on your relationshiphis solo career? I don't feel I'm perspiring my energy away, like I used to. Hes not just a Steve Perry emulator. His solos are always very musical and he always has something new to say. And only now, when people come up to me, and tell me what it meant to them, do I realize what the band accomplished. While all of that was going on, Zappa came to town and left a message for me to talk to him. I like to play on stage and have that good feeling that comes from the people. But for the most part, Im just glad that I didnt completely F up everything. By that time I was actually playing rudiments better than my teacher, so all he could do was help me read music and understand it. Aynsley Dunbar. The only thing is, it doesn't look like a drum kit. That's basically what it's all about. I really try to stay away from it. I was always on the edge of being what I expected out of myself, and what people wanted me to be, and I never wanted to settle for anything short of what it should be. All the backing tracks were done within six weeks in the fall of '85. And he pretty much came back and said, Yknow, this is a personal issue, and Im not gonna be pushed in a corner to get my hip fid. RM: How did you decide on your particular style? Otherwise, the band would never know where the hell I was. We were all lovin it. I started Blue Whale, which was an 8-piece band. I had that group The Aynsley Dunbar Retaliation] for about three years, and we built a following around the country. RM: What kind of practicing are you able to do on the road? I imagine the band had become a huge business, given all the records youd sold. So I find it better to listen to what is being played on the top and then react to that. Actually Jonathan Cain tried to go down and go in and see him in San Francisco and they wouldnt let him in the building! Much like a lot of people are. But dont call it Journey, yknow? Some of em, I think the answer is yes. RM: You did a lot of different styles of music during those three years. They wanted to get on the road, and I said Well, lets just get the video done. So we got the When You Love A Woman video doneI was packing my whole left side in ice between takes. The bigger the drum, the more damping you put inside it, and so you're playing less area anyway. Almost exactly like the panic I felt before I got into the band, Journey. It was through the Beatles that they started moving records across the ocean faster . And Id sleep, and Id wake up, go do the gig, and the same thing would happen all over again. Theyre all great. Paul comes in with the basic song. And when it parks back out in the audience, at the end of the song, I walk offstage. RM: In America, a musician usually has to go to New York or LA .to make it. We toured probably nine, ten months a year, and the other two months that were left, we were in the studio making more new music, and then wed get right back out there. **You went on to make a string of hit records with Steve. Thats about all. I had very mixed emotions I thought, Heres a good opportunity for me, but under the worst conditions. Asked whether the possibility of being offered the job had occurred to him, he said: Did I have a feeling it was going to go that way? RM: You've had your own groups in the past. 'Oh no, this is not for me, I went home, and the next after noon John Mayall called me up and said, "I was sitting in the audience last night and I was wondering if you'd come down and sit in with my band." I'll keep going and see if I can get anything else out of it." But our relationships by then were not the greatest. The idea of playing tunes on drums is beyond most people. Its been a love-hate thing. I was also looking after Jeff as far as that was concerned. And people didnt understand what that meant. Theyre all magical to me. And I started learning how to craft song songs, instead of just jams. The traditional grip is more complicated, but it's easier for me to play. If it wasnt for Herbie Herbert fighting for what he believed was the right direction, which was This guys gonna be the singer of the band, and I dont wanna talk about it anymorehe fought for me. It has a lot of open rolls, 16th notes, 5-stroke rolls and triplets in nice little combinations. The solo is arranged so it's really in-your-face guitar. So you can't rehash what you did before if somebody else is playing something new. And I only wish to protect it, because it means something to them, like it means something to me. Its no different. They thought that because we had got to the point where we were selling out everywhere and making quite a bit of money, that we had reached stardom. AD: Sometimes I'll write out something just to remind myself at rehearsal, but I'll usually just remember it. AD: I used to do a lot of push-ups, sit- ups, and all that to keep myself feeling healthy, but I was still getting drained. So youre not enjoined from discussing him in public? But I didnt. But it just hasnt happened. AD: On. Then I finally got lessons when I was about 13. And I got a phone call from Don Ellis telling me that Herbie had called back and wanted to meet me and talk to me about joining the group. Youre phenomenal. Do you think they wished they didnt need a charismatic singer out front to succeed they way they did? Then Rod Coombes for a while. The less you play, the more they hear. But before that it was ridiculous. I didnt need anything else, as far as an opinion on the show. I find that now, though, even when I push myself, I don't have to go into overdrive. PERRY: Yeah. Im not sure what Im gonna do with it yet, but I got a lot of material, and a lot of it I really like. I still felt this panic to get a deal, get signed, maybe make another record. AD: I workout for about an hour before I play, going through a lot of rudiments and practicing coordination between my hands and feet.
