I HIGHLY recommend this blend if you don't shy away from full- bodied, full-flavored tobacco. I really enjoyed this one and of course it is no longer available. A strong and scented brown-black uneven flake tobacco. However smokeless products, cigarettes and rolling tobacco has to be hidden away. I could handle it once I got used to it, but it always gave me quite the buzz. Too start from the beginning, it is, like all Gawith flakes, of very nice high quality tobacco. While this will never be an everyday/all-day smoke for me (not due to any short-comings but just because my tastes are changing), it will have a place reserved for it in my stock. Bracken is a medium to full bodied flake that is exceptionally smooth, earthy and has an illusive fruity sweetness. Its nothing like the two I mentioned just shares some similar toppings Nothing beats this blend when paired with a nice cup of coffee, its the perfect wake-me-up. Very dark and rich, monochromatic and powerful, but not bitter or over the top. Is "wierd" too subjective? I also get a bare essence of vanilla from the tonquin.

The Great Samuel Gawith Pipe Tobacco Shortage of 2010 I want to enjoy a pipe of tobacco but the nico being that concentrated and the taste of a burnt manure, this is still not for me. A shame this is no longer in production, I think at the time I tried this my palette was simply not ready for the stronger tobaccos with the more robust flavours. Much like it's brother 1792 it is strong but not as bold. The harshness did fade a bit halfway through the bowl, and I was getting some nice flavors from small sips-the tobacco does burn well. Not a huge problem, but it does happen. A full strength, full flavored pipe tobacco. From flake to loose cut, English, Danish, Scottish or just single-origin tobacco. I get hints of unsweetened cocoa and a pronounced woody character overall. There is no way this is likely to bite but its no shrinking violet either. Overall this is one odd blend. BF burns slowly, even when bone dry, and there is no tongue burn. I know it's not produced anymore but if you can find a tin somewhere then pick it up. The underlying flavor of the tobacco is that of dark English flake, ala G&H Dark Flake and Dark Birdseye which I like a lot, but not excessively bitter or as tangy. Perhaps this has some orientals giving rise to this whisper underlying and playing off the sweetness? I think if you take this tobac very slow it pays off. It's like 1792 minus the strong tonquin topping, then infused with this essence of earth. This bowl was much better than the first. Halfway down, the taste becomes stronger and tastes almost like a Tootsie Roll. It is one of the few that sometimes benefit from judiciously dumping the ashes from the first half of the bowl in order to re-invigorate the last 3rd. As comparisons to 1792 Flake are inevitable, here is mine: I smoked pipes of 1792 and Bracken back to back. It's surprisingly mild: a bit of prune, a bit of apricot, as much tangy as sweet. Here lies another departed tobacco from the old world. I was first given a tin of this from a friend who thought I might like Bracken Flake. May be a good mix. The smoking experience is singular. I just get tobacco.
